Summary

New York Times bestselling author Katherine Arden returns with another creepy, spine-tingling adventure in this follow-up to the critically acclaimed Small Spaces and Dead Voices

Having met and outsmarted the smiling man in Dead Voices but fearful of when he'll come again, Ollie, Brian, and Coco are anxiously searching for a way to defeat him once and for all。 By staying together and avoiding remote places, they've steered clear of him so far but their constant worry and stress is taking a toll on their lives and friendship。 So when Ollie's dad and Coco's mom plan a "fun" boat trip on Lake Champlain, the three are apprehensive to say the least。 They haven't had the best of luck on their recent trips and even worse their frenemy Phil is on the boat as well。 But when a lake monster destroys their boat, they end up shipwrecked on a deserted island。 This isn't just any island though。 It's hidden from the outside world in a fog and unless everyone works together to find a way to escape, they won't survive long。

Another great book。 This one took place in Spring。 I guess the next one will be Summer。 I like the seasonal thing。 We added one to the clan as well。 Phil has joined the team。 He remembers。

First of all, that cover is gorgeous。There were a few chilling concepts I liked but overall the story wasn't as chilling as the previous ones。The best bit for me was the opening when the door handle turns in the room in the middle of the storm, chills! So maybe it's me, maybe being trapped in an island doesn't do it for me。 First of all, that cover is gorgeous。There were a few chilling concepts I liked but overall the story wasn't as chilling as the previous ones。The best bit for me was the opening when the door handle turns in the room in the middle of the storm, chills! Fun to read aloud。 The boys were way into it。 We can’t wait to find out what happens next!

I didn't like it as much as the other 2 books in the series。 I still enjoyed it and definitely felt it was pretty intense。 I didn't like it as much as the other 2 books in the series。 I still enjoyed it and definitely felt it was pretty intense。 。。。more

I really like this series but this one is definitely my least favourite。 The pacing is just a little iffy for me and it’s so short so I feel like we didn’t get as much atmosphere as the last book。 That being said, I loved the plot twist at the end and I’m very excited for the concluding novel to release! 3。5/5 stars! ✨✨✨

I like what was done with the characters in this one, but it wasn’t as scary as the other two。 The ending is totally a cliffhanger that I wasn’t expecting。 I’m not sure if I like the cliffhanger or not。 However, I really like what Arden did with the characters。 It fits in with the series and gives the series a structure to it。 So I am really ready for book #4。

I've read this in a day and honestly, I'm not sure how to rate this book。。。When I look at it as a standalone book I enjoyed it。 I loved that we got to glimpse things from Brian's POV。 I also liked that the author included how all the children's parents were worried about their grades and how Ollie, Coco and Brian were really worried for their parents and trying to protect them。 I enjoyed the setting of the book, the monster on the lake was really creepy and the weird island in the fog was intere I've read this in a day and honestly, I'm not sure how to rate this book。。。When I look at it as a standalone book I enjoyed it。 I loved that we got to glimpse things from Brian's POV。 I also liked that the author included how all the children's parents were worried about their grades and how Ollie, Coco and Brian were really worried for their parents and trying to protect them。 I enjoyed the setting of the book, the monster on the lake was really creepy and the weird island in the fog was interesting。 Another good thing, in my opinion, was that the author didn't stop and retell the events of the previous two books when the chance to do that presented itself - trusting that her readers remembered the plot。 I the "previously on" recap era it's refreshing to see that the author trusts her readers' memory。 However, when I look at Dark Waters as the 3rd instalment in the Small Spaces series, for me it's the weakest book (so far) in the series。 As I was reading and enjoying the book I felt like the author was holding back, that something was missing。。。 When I read the ending I realised why and I wished that the holding back thing was a little less obvious。 But I did like the book and I enjoyed it and I hope that middle-grade kids (for whom this book is for) will like it and enjoy it and maybe not mind the things that I mind it。At the moment, my personal rating for the book is 3。5 stars, but since Goodreads doesn't allow half stars I'm giving it a 4-star rating。 It was an enjoyable read, with an interesting story and great characters。 。。。more

Dead Voices and Small Spaces had such interesting story arcs, and were so spooky and atmospheric for their seasons。 This felt like a bad shark movie, i。e。 Deep Blue Sea。 It didn't feel like there was much story, or much progression of the overall plot or character development。 I also have to say, Brian's character was really lacking。 The extent of his abilities that I could gather: over-valuing his own strength and ability to be an asset to the team, and that he can strike matches。 I'm hesitant Dead Voices and Small Spaces had such interesting story arcs, and were so spooky and atmospheric for their seasons。 This felt like a bad shark movie, i。e。 Deep Blue Sea。 It didn't feel like there was much story, or much progression of the overall plot or character development。 I also have to say, Brian's character was really lacking。 The extent of his abilities that I could gather: over-valuing his own strength and ability to be an asset to the team, and that he can strike matches。 I'm hesitant to invest in the next book (even though I loved the first two so much。) 。。。more

This pitch-perfect scary series continues with the third heart-thumping installment。 This features Brian and veers somewhat into new scary-creature territory。 Unusually, Arden makes some of the adults major factors in the story as well as bringing a minor character into a more important part of the story。 This story, like the other two is really scary with the overarching feeling of something evil playing a game of deadly cat and mouse with the protagonists。 This book ends with a serious cliff-h This pitch-perfect scary series continues with the third heart-thumping installment。 This features Brian and veers somewhat into new scary-creature territory。 Unusually, Arden makes some of the adults major factors in the story as well as bringing a minor character into a more important part of the story。 This story, like the other two is really scary with the overarching feeling of something evil playing a game of deadly cat and mouse with the protagonists。 This book ends with a serious cliff-hangar instead of reaching a semi-resolution, leaving readers instantly wanting the next book immediately!!!The cover is attention-grabbing and reminds me of the Paul Zindel horror story Reef of Death in the best sort of way。Buy many copies for your libraries! 。。。more

The first two books were fantastic so I’m really disappointed with this one。 I know I’m not the target audience so I’m keeping that in mind, but the characters just seemed less interesting this time around and the whole plot was boring。 I didn’t like the setting in which it took place and I didn’t feel spooked at all。 The second book really scared the s*** out of me back then so I was hoping to get a similar experience。 Towards the end I could feel some excitement building up but then there was The first two books were fantastic so I’m really disappointed with this one。 I know I’m not the target audience so I’m keeping that in mind, but the characters just seemed less interesting this time around and the whole plot was boring。 I didn’t like the setting in which it took place and I didn’t feel spooked at all。 The second book really scared the s*** out of me back then so I was hoping to get a similar experience。 Towards the end I could feel some excitement building up but then there was an abrupt ending and I felt a little confused because of the impression of just having read a half finished book。 I’m still looking forward to reading the last book in the series nonetheless。 。。。more

Wow I wasn't sure at first but I loved it。 The ending is too much。 I want the next book NOW。 Usually series books don't keep my interest all the time but this series sure does。 Phil sort of annoyed me but he grew on me。 Wow I wasn't sure at first but I loved it。 The ending is too much。 I want the next book NOW。 Usually series books don't keep my interest all the time but this series sure does。 Phil sort of annoyed me but he grew on me。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 That ended way too quickly! I didn't love this quite as much as the other two, but I am still looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up。 Arden still knows how to give good creep factor and there were definitely high stakes。。。I think the pacing of this one felt a little off。 It also suffers from "middle book syndrome" since it's definitely gearing us up for the finale。 Still, if I were a younger reader I would be super happy with this series。 3。5 stars。 That ended way too quickly! This was okay, but not nearly as spooky as the first and second books, unfortunately。 And the "ending" sort of felt like it just。。。ended, instead of being a true cliffhanger。 It was more like we just got half the story。The other issue is one that I guess I somehow missed that*two* of these children are supposed to be BIPOC? Dark Waters is not the best of the series so far, but it is still pretty good。 I look forward to the next book, and wonder who the focus will be this time。 Are they going to keep Phil in the group and give him the story, or will the POV rotate between the original 3? I kind of hope it will be the second option。

Krysti

Wasn’t as scary as the second one, imo。 The beginning started out spookier, but then it kind of became an adventure story。 I felt the ending became rushed。 The spooky elements just weren’t there。 Still, a cute Halloween-y book for the kids。

Gripping and suspenseful。 Beautifully woven plot with realistic and likable characters。 Katherine Arden takes the reader down a twisting story path filled with a horrifying carnivorous monster, death, ghosts, and a centuries-old shipwreck (as well as a modern one)。 The most frightening of all, however, is the omnipresence of an ancient evil that lurks behind every tree on the cursed island。 A thrilling read with a cliffhanger conclusion that definitely left me eagerly awaiting the final book of Gripping and suspenseful。 Beautifully woven plot with realistic and likable characters。 Katherine Arden takes the reader down a twisting story path filled with a horrifying carnivorous monster, death, ghosts, and a centuries-old shipwreck (as well as a modern one)。 The most frightening of all, however, is the omnipresence of an ancient evil that lurks behind every tree on the cursed island。 A thrilling read with a cliffhanger conclusion that definitely left me eagerly awaiting the final book of this spectacular quartet。 I don’t think anything can top the spooky, addictive aesthetic of Small Spaces, but Dark Waters sure comes close。 。。。more

I loved Small Spaces and Dead Voices, but I found Dark Waters incredibly disappointing。 There is much promise for this book。 The front cover is amazing。 I was excited that this book was from Brian’s point of view。 It was nice that Paul was in the book。 I loved the mention of the black spot and a lake monster。 However, the problems with Brian’s character were not solved by making him the point of view character, instead they were amplified。 The only characters who did anything important were Olli I loved Small Spaces and Dead Voices, but I found Dark Waters incredibly disappointing。 There is much promise for this book。 The front cover is amazing。 I was excited that this book was from Brian’s point of view。 It was nice that Paul was in the book。 I loved the mention of the black spot and a lake monster。 However, the problems with Brian’s character were not solved by making him the point of view character, instead they were amplified。 The only characters who did anything important were Ollie and Coco, but we didn’t get to experience their actions because we were stuck with Brian。 I was so disappointed that an opportunity to let him shine just emphasized what an under developed character he is who is languishing as the series progresses。 The lake monster was also extremely disappointing。 I could have done with more about Ollie and Coco and less about their parents。 The whole book read like a set up for the next book。 20% of the ebook was chapters from Small Spaces。 I felt cheated。 Only giving this 3 stars because I love the first two books so much and because of the potential for this to have been a worthy addition to the series。 。。。more

A 3。5 rating for me, if only because the other two are incredible。 The cliffhanger here made this feel like a set up for an epic book 4, though!

Just like the previous two books in this series, Dark Waters is filled with such a great, creepy atmosphere, excellent themes, and neat characters。 I loved seeing more of Brian in this one, as well as getting a discussion of the trauma that the kids are feeling after having dealt with multiple very scary experiences over the past two books。 I wasn't such a huge fan of the book ending on a cliffhanger this time, though。 I just hope the last book comes out soon!Content Warnings:trauma, injury, ill Just like the previous two books in this series, Dark Waters is filled with such a great, creepy atmosphere, excellent themes, and neat characters。 I loved seeing more of Brian in this one, as well as getting a discussion of the trauma that the kids are feeling after having dealt with multiple very scary experiences over the past two books。 I wasn't such a huge fan of the book ending on a cliffhanger this time, though。 I just hope the last book comes out soon!Content Warnings:trauma, injury, illness, death, death of a family member 。。。more

So far the darkest book in this series。 This time round we have Brian as the main focus。 I loved that adults were more present here。 I also loved that the parents trusted the kids and actually noticed that the children have changed and grown during the year。 That ending though makes me so sad that I again have to wait for the next and final book。

Small Spaces was the most fun。Dead Voices was the spookiest。 This one is still so great, but doesn’t rank as high as the two previous ones。 Try the series!

Just not as enthralling as the first two。 No goosebumps or edge of seat moments that defined those other works。

This was probably my least favorite of the books in this series to date, but I did have a mildly entertaining time。Continuing from the previous book, Coco, Ollie, and Brian have spent the winter shacking up with each other and staying close to crowds to be safe。 But when they go on a weekend trip to a nearby lake, their worlds are once again turned upside down and they become stranded in a strange place。 Can they make it out unscathed, or has the Smiling Man finally won his war against them? This This was probably my least favorite of the books in this series to date, but I did have a mildly entertaining time。Continuing from the previous book, Coco, Ollie, and Brian have spent the winter shacking up with each other and staying close to crowds to be safe。 But when they go on a weekend trip to a nearby lake, their worlds are once again turned upside down and they become stranded in a strange place。 Can they make it out unscathed, or has the Smiling Man finally won his war against them? This book had a lot of promise, but fell short in a few ways that disappointed me。 Despite all the details I'm about to give, I'm still determined to read this series through to the end (there's one more book coming)。Coco, Ollie, and Brian have been through a lot together。 As characters, they didn't really progress all that much this time, but we do get an additional character to their team, Phil。 He's a kid that was on the bus from their fall adventure in the first book。 I like what Phil added to the plate, and that things weren't as simple as our three protagonists initially thought。That being said, this book's POV felt unbalanced。 Brian takes center stage as the main POV, but there are moments of Coco in there。 This creates a bit of confusion and could've been handled a bit better。 Why not simply do separate chapters for each character? Also, Ollie was something of a wallflower this time, which seemed odd given how this series started out in her perspective。 In the second book, Brian was absent through a good portion of it (that didn't work for me either), so I'm seeing something of a pattern that just doesn't work for me without believable explanation。The plot as always drew me in。 I knew this little lake incursion wasn't going to end well, so I was hoping for some light chills and thrills。 Unfortunately, there wasn't really too many of those along the way this time, at least not what we are used to。 There is something hunting them where they are stranded, and while that's creepy it's not necessarily supernatural。 Also, the Smiling Man doesn't really make a direct appearance, which seemed a bit odd。 It was still fun to follow along our protagonists' adventure, but there was just something lacking here。I will say, I did enjoy the ending immensely, as it gives us more of a cliffhanger and sets the stage for the next book, but other elements could've been handled better。Looking forward to trying out the last book once it's out! 。。。more
